Degrees and lateral entry
- B.Tech and B.E. are equivalent four-year undergraduate engineering degrees; the name depends on the institution.
- Diploma in engineering is a three-year course after Class 10. Diploma holders can usually join B.Tech directly in the second year through lateral entry.
- M.Tech / M.E. are two-year postgraduate degrees, mostly through GATE.

Frequently asked questions
Yes — through state CETs, private university entrance tests, or in some states on Class 12 marks. JEE is needed for NITs, IIITs and IITs.
In many states, private engineering colleges may fill a share of seats as management quota under state rules. Make sure the fee is the approved one and paid to the college against a receipt.
It depends on what you want to do next. For a core engineering career the branch matters more; for software jobs or higher studies the college often matters more. We talk it through with you.
